Changes to the basic disclosure process
From January 2018, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is making some important changes to the basic disclosure process relating to criminal record checks. From next month, individuals who need to obtain a basic disclosure check for a job in England and Wales should apply to the DBS, not to Disclosure Scotland. Up until now, individuals in England and Wales have had to apply for basic disclosure to Disclosure Scotland. Individuals who need a basic disclosure check for a job in Scotland should still apply to Disclosure Scotland. The DBS is to set up a new online application process that will be available on www.gov.uk.
Alternatively, individuals can use a “Responsible Organisation”, i.e. a third party registered with the DBS, to submit the basic disclosure check on their behalf.
Employers in England and Wales who require job applicants to obtain a basic disclosure check as a condition of employment should therefore ensure that, from January 2018, they direct them to the DBS to obtain it. The DBS has increased its staffing levels to deal with the additional checks.
